RaceBase E-mail Group Summer Carnival Competition

$500 Cash to the Winner - Free Entry - Starts 26th December 2007

2006-07 Winner - Ron B
2007-08 Winner - John B

This competition is based on the rules to the annual Hastings 'Punter of the Year' competition. The differences are :

1) The contestants are not playing with real money but with imaginary cyber-monopoly-money.
2) The competition is not held on one day but is spread over 10 specified punting days. Competitors nominate ONE race at a New Zealand gallops meeting from each of the days and can bet on THAT RACE ONLY.
3) Other variations as outlined in the rules below.

The Rules
Contestants must firstly be a member of the RaceBase e-mail group. Anyone can join the group and it is free. Read how to join the group here. There can only be one entry to the competition per person and one entry per e-mail address. E-mail addresses must be real addresses (xtra, clear etc), not hotmail or yahoo (or equivalent) accounts, unless that address has been a long-standing member of the group. Contestants place their bets by sending them to the e-mail group at racebase@yahoogroups.com. No nom-de-plumes are allowed for contestants, but they can enter using their first name and first initial of their surname if they wish. For example, I can enter as Peter H. To register for the competition, simply be a member of the e-mail group and post a bet on 26th December 2007. After that date, new contestants can join on Saturday 29th December, but with an automatic $500 penalty deducted from their bank. After this, no new entries to the competition will be accepted.

The competition starts  on 26th December 2007 and ends on 9th February 2008. Contestants have $1500 of cyber-monopoly-money as their initial bank in the competition. They can spend any amount up to their total bank on ONE race on each of the specified punting days. They must bet at least $150 in total each day. Therefore anyone with a total betting bank of less than $150 is eliminated from the competition. Betting is on New Zealand gallops racing only. If, for any reason, after the first day, a contestant misses a day, then the contestant is not eliminated, but an automatic $200 is deducted from his total.

You can bet on win, place, trifecta, quinella, treble or double or a combination of any of these. In the case of trebles and doubles, the contestants nominated race must be one leg of the treble or double. A contestant can make any combination of any of the allowable bet types within the nominated race. He can bet on more than one horse if he wishes (within the race). The contestant is allowed to take multiple doubles or trebles and may even anchor a horse in one of the other non-nominated race legs. No other bet types are allowed (eg no Pick 6's, fixed odds or all-ups).

Contestants must place their bets anytime BEFORE 12 NOON ON THE DAY OF THE RACE OR AT LEAST ONE HOUR BEFORE THE RACE IF IT IS TO START BEFORE 1PM.

Punting Days are as follows :
Day 1 :
26th December 2007 (Boxing Day)
Day 2 : 29th December 2007 (Saturday)
Day 3 : 1st January 2008 (New Years Day)
Day 4 : 5th January 2008 (Saturday)
Day 5 : 12th January 2008 (Saturday)
Day 6 : 19th January 2008 (Saturday)
Day 7 : 26th January 2008 (Saturday)
Day 8 : 2nd February 2008 (Saturday)
Day 9 : 6th February 2008 (Waitangi Day)
Day 10 : 9th February 2008 (Saturday)

Scratchings
Competitors must take note of scratchings. In the case of normal scratchings (ie those made before 8 am on race morning), a contestant may replace that bet with another, as long as it is made, on the same or any other race, within the previously mentioned time constraints. If a contestant places a bet on a scratched horse (normal scratching) and doesn't replace it, all the bets placed on the horse will be transferred to the TAB favourite at tote close. If a horse is late-scratched (ie after 8 am on race morning), a contestant will not be penalised. He will receive back any money spent on the horse. He may also, if he chooses, replace the bet with another on the same or any other race, as long as it is placed within the time constraints. If a horse is late scratched in the 2nd leg of a treble or double or the 3rd leg of a treble, those bets will be transferred to the favourite. Otherwise, if it is the 1st leg, then bets on these two bet types will be refunded for the scratched runners (much the same as the TAB rules). If a meeting is abandoned, contestants will not be penalised. In such cases, the bets are treated as a late scratchings, even if the abandonment is declared before the competitors bets are made.

Winner
The winner is the contestant who has accumulated the largest bank after racing on the 9th February 2008. He/she will be sent a cheque for $500 made out to the entrant.

E-mail me if you want in to the competition but are having trouble joining the e-mail group (I will join you up from my end).

Good Luck.

Congrats to John B who won the comp in the very last round on an all-up bet on Castlereah at Awapuni.
